Ansen Seale's photographs play with the limits of our perception, to desorientate us, by body distortions. As if these bodies were genetically modified, or of an other human reality Ansen Seale roots his art in the contemporary research done on body and the limits of its representation. From the artist Orlan that sculpted a religious object with some of her flesh, body art movement, to Marina Abramovic who scarrified herself in art performances, body has been a main issue in these last decades.
Body art deals with gender issues and the place our occidental civilization gave to the representation of body. This is why Ansen Seale's art reveals its surrealistic nature and reminds us of movies such as Freaks, by the movie maker Tod Browning where freaks were filmed in a circus, movie that inspired David Lynch's Elephant Man.
But Ansen Seale's purpose is elsewhere: in a surrealistic approach. In fact, in surrealistic art, paintings feature elements of surprise, and juxtapositions that are not expected. Ansen Seale pictures the changing aspects of our bodies, capturing the complexity of its truth.
