Eileen concentrates mostly on abstract images of nature. Her untethered geographical life presented a vast array of emotion-rich landscapes. These images are the foundation of her inspiration. Open spaces have always served as a refuge for me – places of calm and serenity – walking across meadows and prairie or under a canopy of foliage. Places where the external and internal cacophony of noise retreats, if only for a few moments. For example, the view of leaves scattered on the forest carpet. This image pulls me into the crisp, invigorating autumn air and the intense, vibrant seasonal aromas that signal the chromatic end of another season. This particular image inspired much of my work created using the reverse print paint technique, a rustic technique that reverses the printing order and moves the first laid color to the foreground.
I use color arbitrarily. Instead of trying to reproduce an exact likeness of a scene or landscape, I select colors that set mood and tempo and liberate the imagination and distort the focus. Using strong brush or blade strokes develops texture and depth to the images – where color combines and is released. This technique attempts to capture the turbulence of movement – the excitement, hesitation, anticipation – like standing on the front porch as the dark line of an impending storm approaches, an orthogonal glance out of a moving vehicle or visualization of an heated discussion between two people.
Eileen was born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and she currently resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
