Statement :   My work reveals an intimate view of the natural world, often shot in remote areas, as well as urban centers. Formal training in graphic design dictates that I eliminate clutter, and concentrate on the subject at hand. My photographic process draws upon traditional photography training, and is blended with current digital techniques and equipment. I print all images using archival ink jet technology on museum grade fine art papers. And to complete the process, archival materials are used in all stages of the framing process.
Information :   Jan Bell emerged on the art photography scene in the year 2000; although that wasn’t the beginning of his photography evolution. He began his career in a commercial photo studio, evolving to a full-time professional.

Mr. Bell has garnered many "best of show" awards and most recently received the Grand Prize award, with his “Agave” print in the Ansel Adams Photography Competition. Also in 2010, Bell was awarded a top prize at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography and will have an exclusive showing of his work beginning on June 3, 2011. The show will feature a wide array of his highly acclaimed work, including the two recent award-winning photos.

Bell combines his love of nature with his art. An avid adventurer, he treks to remote locations throughout the U.S. in search of his subjects. It is this time in the wilderness that allows him to connect with nature and compose his images. Generally he photographs solo, but periodically enjoys a day shoot with other professionals. He has also worked with guides on occassion. On one guided trek, near the border of Arizona and Utah, he was a 2.5 hour drive from any paved road, or another human.

One will notice that Bell specializes in narrowing one’s view of his world. What he sees through his viewfinder is an “intimate view” as he refers to it. It is the same world that we all see, but often overlook due to our hectic lives. His subjects take center stage, providing a clean, simple composition for his viewers. His images are a tribute to the natural world. And his presentation illustrates his attention to detail. He tributes his clean sense of design to a thirty-year career as a designer with PBS.

Mr. Bell signed on with the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography in 2010 and will have a solo show at the gallery beginning June 3. It will feature a wide array of his highly acclaimed work, including the two recent award-winning photos.
